Program Goals

”So it is with children who learn to read fluently and well: They begin to take flight into whole new worlds as effortlessly as young birds take to the sky”
        - William James.

Overall Goals

The overall goal of the PPIP program is to raise phonemic awareness, and to be able to recognize sound and letter relationships. The specific goals and objectives for the Junior Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Grade One programs are described under separate sections.

Specific Goals

Junior Kindergarten
Ages 4 to 5.

The focus is on recognizing 20 consonant and 5 short vowel sounds in the initial position of the word. The relationship between the visual letter and its sound is introduced.

Kindergarten
Ages 5 to 6.

Reinforcement of previous letter sounds relationships with a focus of their final position in a word, consonant blends in the initial and final position, and forming small words.

Grade One
Ages 6 to 7.

All previously taught concepts are reinforced with the addition of diphthongs, digraphs, trigraphs and long vowel sounds. An increasingly greater number of words are taught at this level, as well as activities that teach spelling strategies.
